Dear Mr. Kim:

On behalf of the Dean and Faculty of the School of Information, I am pleased to inform you that you have been conditionally admitted to the Master of Science in Information program at the School of Information, University of Michigan for fall 2012! In order to change your status from conditional to 'regular' admission, we must receive a final, official transcript that posts the undergraduate degree you earned. We must receive this transcript by the end of your first term of enrollment. All credit hours earned while you are in conditional status will count toward the graduate credit hours required to complete the program. I invite you to visithttp://youtu.be/xDe9T9KtH_s for a welcome from our Dean.

If you would like to visit the School, we would be happy to arrange a schedule of activities for you. Please contact the Office of Student Affairs at  or call. Activities may include meeting with students, sitting in on a class, touring SI facilities and/or the UM campus, meeting with SI admissions or career services staff, and exploring housing options. We will provide you with information on area accommodations, parking and/or airport shuttle service as needed. If you are traveling from outside the country, we realize that a visit to campus may be prohibitive. We are more than happy to answer any questions you might have over email or phone, and we could put you in contact with a current student as well.

We’ve created a Facebook group for prospective MSI students. You can join it by visiting. We’re adding a lot of great information to this group, including external scholarship information, how to find part-time jobs, SI newsletters, pictures of SI, and more! We also have current students in the group, so feel free to ask them any questions you may have. We’re often adding new content, so once you join, be sure to periodically check in with the group!

Once you have made your decision to accept or decline our admission offer, please complete the following steps: (1) Go to Wolverine Access (2) Click on New and Prospective Student Business (3) Open your University of Michigan Friend Account. If you have not already created a Friend Account, go to this link:  (4) Click on Application Status to accept or decline the offer of admission.

International applicants seeking an F-1 or J-1 visa are required to demonstrate that they have adequate financial resources to cover the cost of their educational expenses while in the U.S. Please submit the Affidavit of Financial Support, which can be found at: along with the required funding documentation. Please also include a copy of your passport. After you have indicated your acceptance of the admission offer using Wolverine Access and we have received all of the required financial information, we will begin the preparation of your I-20 or DS-2019. You can view the processing of your immigration paperwork by going to New and Prospective Student Business on Wolverine Access and clicking on "view the I-20 or DS-2019 status" link. Please read the information on these pages carefully as they will contain important SEVIS information. Once SEVIS has approved your immigration document, the SEVIS ID number will appear so you can begin the Visa application process.

Using an online forum and live chats, we will provide course advising in mid-July, and course registration will open for new students in early August. MSI Orientation will be held during the week before the start of classes. This mandatory event will include information on career services, financial aid resources, and will feature social activities with new and current students. Additional details will be provided to you. Classes for fall 2012 begin Tuesday, September 4.

Some entering international students are now required to be screened for tuberculosis. Screening will be offered free on campus. See http://www.uhs.umich.edu/tbscreen or send an email to  for more information. Students who need to be screened will be notified via email. We want to reassure you that a TB infection will not jeopardize your visa status. Health care is completely confidential.

We hope you plan to join the SI community for your graduate education. I am confident that you will enjoy your learning experience at the School of Information, the city of Ann Arbor, and the opportunities that our program will present.
Sincerely,
Margaret Hedstrom Associate Dean for Academic Affairs
